MMRDA opens bidding on Metro Line 5A, stretching the network from Kalyan to Ulhasnagar
The MMRDA has begun inviting bids for Metro Line 5A, the 11.83-km elevated extension that will carry the Line 5 corridor beyond Kalyan to Ulhasnagar. The authority has floated tenders including for a general consultant to oversee the ₹4,063-crore project, the first concrete procurement step since the state government approved the integrated Line 5–5A scheme on 22 April 2026.
The extension adds seven elevated stations — Durgadi, Khadakpada, Bhoirwadi, Shivaji Path, Shanti Nagar, Shivaji Chowk and Ulhasnagar — taking the combined Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan–Ulhasnagar corridor to 34.21 km, with a total outlay of about ₹18,130 crore. The original Line 5 stretch is itself nearing the finish on its first phase, with the Thane–Bhiwandi section approaching safety-commissioner inspection.
For the property market, this is the metro network's first push into Ulhasnagar and the deeper Kalyan belt — one of the MMR's most affordable and most populous frontiers. Rail-plus-metro interchange at Kalyan, layered on the under-construction Panvel–Karjat suburban line nearby, would materially change commute maths for a corridor where housing demand has long outrun transport supply. The Mira–Bhayandar experience after Line 9's opening suggests connectivity announcements alone can start repricing peripheral micro-markets well before trains run.
That said, tendering is the start of a multi-year build. Utility shifting, land pockets along Kalyan's dense stretches and funding cadence will determine whether the corridor holds to schedule.
