Thane's coastal road crosses half its viaduct foundations eight months into construction

The MMRDA announced this week that Thane Coastal Road-1 has completed more than 50 per cent of the foundation work for its elevated viaduct, just eight months after construction began. Pier-cap and I-girder erection is under way, an unusually brisk pace for a major MMR road project.

The 13.45-km, six-lane, access-controlled corridor runs from Kharegaon in Kalwa to Gaimukh, hugging the creek edge as an alternative to the chronically congested Ghodbunder Road. It is the first greenfield road project in India to use a single-pile, single-pier monopile system on land — a design chosen partly to lighten the footprint through the sensitive mangrove belt. At Gaimukh, the road will plug into the planned Gaimukh–Fountain Hotel tunnel, setting up a continuous Thane–Bhayander link that ultimately ties into the wider coastal corridor being built toward Versova.

The stakes for Thane's housing market are direct. Ghodbunder Road is the spine along which most of the city's new supply — Kolshet, Balkum, Kavesar, Ovala, Majiwada's fringes — has been launched, and its congestion is priced into every brochure. The authority projects the corridor will cut the Kalwa–Gaimukh run from over 40 minutes to about 15, which would meaningfully widen the catchment for both Thane employers and Mumbai-bound commuters.

Completion is targeted for the end of 2028. Creek-side construction through monsoons remains the standard risk to that date, but a 50-per-cent foundation mark inside eight months gives the timeline more credibility than most.
