Afcons wins ₹5,301-crore contract to build Vadhavan Port's breakwater as India's biggest port takes shape
Afcons Infrastructure has received a letter of award, dated 9 June, to build a 10.14-km offshore breakwater for Vadhavan Port in Palghar — a ₹5,301-crore package and, once finished, the second-longest breakwater in the world. The award shifts the long-planned deep-water port from clearances into heavy marine construction.
Vadhavan is a roughly ₹76,220-crore project being developed by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and the Maharashtra Maritime Board through a special-purpose vehicle. At full build it is designed to handle about 23.2 million containers and nearly 298 million tonnes of cargo a year — which would make it India's largest public port — with the first phase targeted for 2029. Adani Ports has separately signed MoUs with JNPA worth around $6 billion for terminals and marine infrastructure.
For real estate, Vadhavan sits at the northern edge of the MMR's pull, in a Palghar belt that has trailed Thane and Navi Mumbai on prices largely because it lacked an anchor. A working mega-port, and the road and rail links it draws in, is the kind of catalyst that re-rates land over a decade — much as the Navi Mumbai airport is doing to the south.
The effects are long-dated rather than immediate, and execution risk around land, environment and local opposition among coastal communities is real. But the breakwater award is the clearest sign yet that the project is moving.
