Maharashtra clears a Rungis-style international agri-market on 558 hectares beside Vadhavan port
The Maharashtra cabinet on July 14 approved the transfer of 558.43 hectares of government land in Palghar district for an international-standard agricultural wholesale market, to be developed on the lines of the Rungis market near Paris, the world's largest fresh-produce hub. The site sits in the influence zone of the under-construction Vadhavan deep-sea port.
The decision folds into a wider cluster of moves around Vadhavan: reclamation packages for the roughly ₹76,000-crore port are heading to bid, and the state has been assembling road, rail and logistics links across Palghar. An agri-market of this scale is designed to aggregate export-bound produce from across Maharashtra and route it through the new port's terminals, with grading, cold-chain and processing activity clustered around it.
Why it matters for MMR: Palghar is the region's next growth frontier, with the state pegging the district's build-out at more than ₹1.3 lakh crore, and anchor institutions of this kind tend to pull warehousing, transport hubs and worker housing in their wake. For landowners and investors north of Virar, the cabinet decision adds another dated, concrete marker that the corridor is moving from plan to allocation.
The market will still need enabling infrastructure — water, power and access roads — before construction can begin, and no executing agency, operating model or timeline has been announced yet. Which body is named to build and run it is the detail to watch next.
