Thane's ₹12,200-crore ring metro clears its coastal-zone hurdle
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change granted Coastal Regulation Zone clearance to the Thane Integral Ring Metro Rail Project on 22 July, according to the trade publication Indian Infrastructure. The same report noted that in May the ministry gave in-principle approval for the diversion of 7.65 hectares of the 10.45 hectares of forest land the alignment requires.
The project was approved by the Union Cabinet in August 2024 at an estimated cost of about ₹12,200 crore, funded with equal equity from the central and state governments plus part-funding from bilateral agencies. Maha Metro is the implementing agency. The corridor runs roughly 29 km as a ring along the western periphery of Thane city, with 22 stations; about 3 km is planned underground and the remainder elevated.
Why it matters for MMR: Thane has grown outward faster than it has grown across. The city is comparatively well served on radial links — Central Railway, the Eastern Express Highway, and the Thane–Borivali twin tunnel now under construction — but internal movement still depends on congested roads. A ring alignment addresses a different problem from a radial one, and environmental and forest clearances are precisely the stage at which Indian metro projects most often lose years.
The caveat for buyers is timing. A CRZ clearance permits procurement, not trains. Maha Metro has been preparing tender documents, and the line is currently expected to be operational towards the end of the decade. Station-adjacent pricing in MMR has typically moved in two separate phases — once around announcement, again near commissioning — and the interval between them is usually measured in years, not quarters.
