Centre sanctions 2.13 lakh more PMAY-Urban 2.0 homes, with Maharashtra among the beneficiaries
The Centre has sanctioned a further 2.13 lakh homes under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0 at the scheme's seventh sanctioning committee meeting on June 17, taking cumulative approvals under the programme past 16.1 lakh houses. Maharashtra was among the 16 states to receive allocations in this round.
Most of the newly cleared homes fall under the beneficiary-led construction route, with a smaller tranche under affordable housing in partnership. The government said about 2.05 lakh of the 2.13 lakh houses — roughly 97% — were allotted to women, including widows and single women, reflecting the scheme's emphasis on ownership in women's names.
For Maharashtra and the MMR, schemes like PMAY-U sit at the affordable end of a market whose headlines are usually dominated by premium launches. Sanctioned units, subsidised construction and partnership projects feed the entry-level supply that mid- and lower-income households rely on, and they shape demand in peripheral but better-connected nodes.
As ever, a sanction is a commitment to build rather than a finished home, and delivery timelines vary widely across states. But a steady cadence of central approvals provides a baseline of affordable supply running beneath the MMR's pricier, headline-grabbing segment.
