Navi Mumbai airport books its first international route as Abu Dhabi flights take off in July

Air India Express confirmed on 22 June that it will operate direct flights between Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and Abu Dhabi from 15 July, the first international route from Maharashtra's new greenfield airport. The launch follows a customs review of the facility in mid-June and is set to run alongside cargo freighter operations, with the airport targeting roughly 18 weekly freighter movements at the outset.

NMIA began commercial domestic flights in late December 2025. Moving to international passenger and cargo service marks its shift from a relief valve for the saturated Mumbai airport into a genuine second gateway for the region — and a working international link for the eastern and trans-harbour stretches of the MMR.

For property, the airport has long been the headline catalyst for Navi Mumbai's southern nodes — Ulwe, Dronagiri, Panvel and the Taloja belt — where connectivity via the Atal Setu and the metro has already drawn buyers in. A live international route gives that thesis a concrete date rather than a promise, and tends to sharpen interest in both residential land and warehousing within the airport's catchment.

How quickly the schedule scales will shape absorption; a single route is a start, not a hub. Registered-deal activity in the airport belt is worth watching as one reference point among many, not a verdict on the whole market.
