MMRDA's Orange Gate–Marine Drive tunnel passes 250 metres as main drive begins

The MMRDA has crossed an early milestone on its Orange Gate–Marine Drive underground road link, completing about 250 metres of tunnelling with what it calls India's largest slurry-shield boring machine deployed on an urban road project. The main drive is now under way after tunnelling began in January 2026.

The project comprises twin tunnels of more than 7 km running beneath some of Mumbai's most sensitive corridors — including the Central and Western Railway lines and Metro Line 3 — demanding high-precision engineering through dense, built-up ground. It is designed to connect the Eastern Freeway to the Mumbai Coastal Road, with completion targeted by December 2028.

Once open, the link is expected to cut the Orange Gate–Marine Drive journey to roughly five minutes, knitting the island city's eastern and western waterfronts into a near-continuous high-speed loop alongside the Coastal Road and Atal Setu.

For South Mumbai property, faster cross-city access has historically supported values in well-connected pockets. The bigger prize is network effects: as the freeway, coastal road and harbour link join up, travel times across the southern peninsula compress — a long-run positive for both residential and commercial demand.
