Metro Line 5's Thane–Bhiwandi phase nears a December launch as the state expands the Kalyan corridor

MMRDA is closing in on the first phase of Metro Line 5, the 24.9 km Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan corridor. The Thane-to-Bhiwandi stretch (Kapurbawdi to Dhamankar Naka) is reported to be more than 95% complete, with piers and girders in place and services targeted for around December 2026.

In April, the state cabinet cleared a major expansion of the line, lifting the sanctioned cost from about ₹8,416 crore to ₹18,130 crore (including the Line 5A component) and extending the corridor deeper toward Ulhasnagar. Line 5 is designed to interconnect with Metro Line 4, the proposed Line 12 to Taloja and Central Railway services.

The corridor threads through some of the MMR's most affordable housing belts — Bhiwandi, Kalyan and the extended eastern suburbs — where commute time has long been the main discount on price. Faster, more predictable metro access tends to narrow that gap over time, and infrastructure milestones here have historically moved buyer interest more sharply than in already well-connected suburbs.

The phasing matters. The Thane–Bhiwandi leg is close, but the Dhamankar Naka-to-Kalyan section still involves land acquisition and an underground stretch. Delivery on the December timeline, and on the harder second phase, will decide how quickly the corridor's connectivity premium actually shows up in prices.
