Pune's Hinjawadi metro gets an opening date: first 12 km to run from July 15

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority has confirmed that Pune Metro Line 3 will begin passenger operations on July 15, opening a first 12-km section between Maan and Ramnagar with 12 stations. The remaining stretch, with 11 more stations, is expected to follow within about one-and-a-half to two months, per PMRDA commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari, after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed the project be run in mission mode.

The 23.2-km, fully elevated corridor links the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park at Hinjawadi with Shivajinagar in central Pune. It carries a distinction: it is India's first metro built under the public-private partnership model of the 2017 Metro Rail Policy, implemented by a consortium led by Tata Realty and Infrastructure with Siemens Project Ventures.

Some honesty about the calendar is warranted — the launch has slipped repeatedly, from April to June 15 and now July 15, with the line reported over 94 per cent complete as of the spring. The first section opening is the milestone to bank; full-corridor service is the one that changes commutes.

For property, the impact runs through Maharashtra's second-biggest market: Hinjawadi hosts lakhs of IT workers and some of Pune's harshest peak congestion. Rail access typically firms up rental demand in station catchments — Wakad, Balewadi and the Baner fringe — and strengthens the corridor's case for the GCC expansion that showed up strongly in this half's office-leasing data.
