Five days of rain test Panvel's growth nodes: fallen trees, evacuations, a flood scare

Heavy rain over three days dropped more than 420 mm on Panvel Municipal Corporation limits, uprooting 103 trees — 59 of them in the CIDCO-built nodes of Kharghar, Taloja and Navade, with the rest spread across Panvel, New Panvel, Khanda Colony, Kalamboli and Kamothe. No casualties were reported, though more than a dozen parked vehicles were damaged.

As the rain ran into a fifth day, the count rose to about 150 fallen trees and the corporation shifted 435 residents to relief camps amid flood alerts, evacuating one building as a precaution. Officials credited pre-monsoon clearing of water hyacinth from the Gadhi river with averting a more serious flood along its banks.

The tree failures have prompted questions about plantation quality in the CIDCO-developed nodes — residents allege many trees were planted too shallow to withstand sustained downpours — and, more broadly, about how drainage and green cover are maintained as these nodes densify.

For the airport-corridor belt, where Kharghar, Taloja and Panvel are among the MMR's fastest-growing residential markets, monsoon performance is becoming a practical due-diligence item: how a node's roads, drains and open spaces hold up in peak rain is part of what buyers are paying for.
